Worrisome Signs in Pregnancy
1st Trimester
Vaginal bleeding and painful cramping are signs of a miscarriage. Evaluation is indicated but not emergent, unless you are changing your pad every hour for more than 2 hours in a row. That amount of bleeding is too heavy.
Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms in the first trimester. If you are not able to keep down fluids for a whole day, you are not able to adequately hydrate yourself and should get evaluated/get IV nausea meds.
2nd Trimester/3rd Trimester
Headache that won’t go away after taking Tylenol
Painful cramping that you aren’t able to talk through. Occurs every 5 minutes and persists for at least an hour. Does not improve with rest, hydration, or emptying your bladder.
Heavy vaginal bleeding. If it’s more than light spotting, you should get evaluated. Remember it’s common to have light spotting after intercourse or getting your cervix checked. Heavy bleeding is never normal.
Leaking fluid. Sometimes it’s a slow trickle that’s constant and sometimes it’s a big gush. You should get evaluated because it could mean your bag of water broke.
Decreased fetal movement. Movement isn’t predictable before 28 weeks. But if you have a prolonged period of no movement and nothing is improving it, get evaluated. After 28 weeks, baby should be kicking/soft rolling 5-10 times every 1-2 hours. If not feeling baby, focus on belly in a quiet room, drink something cold, and eat something sweet, still no improvement, then get evaluated. Don’t wait more than an hour to see improvement.
After 37 weeks
Decreased fetal movement. Don’t wait at all. Get evaluated.
